Ellen C. Greaves

After earning her doctorate in sports management and then serving as an administrator at UNC-Greensboro for 12 years, Ellen Greaves earned her J.D. magna cum laude at the University of Illinois and was admitted to practice in Illinois in 1994. While in law school she was president of the Student Bar Association and served as the founding editor-in-chief of the Elder Law Journal. Her practice has included serving as corporate counsel for the Illinois State Employees Association and representing hundreds of clients in employment matters from grievance and administrative hearings under the state personnel statutes to employment discrimination hearings before the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the Office of Civil Rights in Chicago. Her law practice has focused on employment, administrative and corporate law and she has advised a number of small businesses as her clients.

Upon returning to North Carolina, Ellen served as the executive director of the second largest statewide teachers organization, working with the legislature to develop education policy and to establish teacher related employment policies in collaboration with the NC School Administrators and the NC Association of School Boards organizations. She also supervised in-house and contract counsel in representing thousands of members in employment-related matters. She served on state-wide task forces for the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction, as well as serving on the board of the Public School Forum of North Carolina. She was a member of a delegation from North Carolina that travelled to India to study that country’s education system as it relates to its economic development policies pertaining to math, science, and technology. Dr. Greaves is currently certified by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission to serve as a mediator for Superior Court, Family Financial and District Court settlements, and is a North Carolina Industrial Commission mediator for Workers’ Compensation cases. She has served as a volunteer mediator for Carolina Dispute Settlement Services since the fall of 2008. She has facilitated over 60 mediations since November, 2008.
