Community Services

We all have conflicts in our lives. And sometimes we need help in getting those disputes resolved. CDSS’ community service program addresses the conflict resolution needs for a wide range of community conflicts. Neighbors, landlords/tenants, roommates, homeowners’ associations, consumer complaints, and disputes between friends and family members are just some examples of the types of disputes suitable for mediation or conciliation.

Mediation is a voluntary process so all the parties to a dispute must be willing to talk to each other (with the help of a mediator) to generate their own options for resolving their dispute. Unlike a trial where a judge determines which party wins and which party loses, mediators are not judges and do not decide how a dispute should be resolved. In mediation, the power of resolution rests with the parties and finding solutions that work for all of them. For additional information about mediation, please go to the mediation page.

The trained mediators at CDSS are impartial and will work with all parties to help them find the best resolution for their particular situation. Mediators do not take sides or advocate for any person or position. Any agreement reached is one that comes from the people involved in the dispute. When an agreement is reached, the agreement is written down and all parties sign it.

The fees for community cases are based on a sliding scale for each party at the mediation. Low income and indigent clients typically are not charged. Most mediations take place in our office and are scheduled at a time mutually acceptable to all involved.
